Know Your Constitution

The 1999 Constitution

 SECTION 15 (1)

(1) The motto of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress.

(Nigeria’s motto is UNITY and FAITH, PEACE and PROGRESS)


SECTION 15 (2)

Accordingly, national integration shall be actively promoted whilst discrimination on the grounds of place of origin, circumstance of birth, sex, religion, status, ethnic or linguistic association or ties shall be prohibited.

(This means that according to our motto, to promote National integration, no one is allowed to discriminate against a person based on their place of origin, birth, sex, religion, status, language or tribe)


SECTION 15 (3) (a) (b) (c) (d)

For the purpose of promoting national integration, it shall be the duty of the State to –

(To promote national harmony, it is the duty of the Government to:

a.) provide adequate facilities for, and encourage free mobility of people, goods and services throughout the Federation;

Provide facilities and encourage the free movement of people, goods and services throughout Nigeria

b.) secure full residence rights for every citizen in all parts of the Federation;

To give full rights to every Nigerian to live in any part of Nigeria   

c.) encourage intermarriage among persons from different places of origin, or of different religious, ethnic or linguistic association or ties; and

To encourage inter-marriage with people of different places, religion, tribes, languages in Nigeria 

d.) promote or encourage the formation of associations that cut across ethnic, linguistic, religious or other sectional barriers.

To encourage associations across ethnic, language, religious and other barriers)


SECTION 15 (4)

The State shall foster a feeling of belonging and of involvement among the various peoples of the Federation, to the end that loyalty to the nation shall override sectional loyalties.

(This means that the Government shall create a feeling of belonging and involvement amongst all the peoples of Nigeria so that the loyalty to nation shall override all others)


SECTION 15 (5)

The State shall abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power.

(The government shall remove corruption and abuse of power)
